The First Witnesses

Climate change casts a long shadow, threatening the very livelihoods of those who nourish the world – farmers and fishing communities. Worldwide, its effects are dire. In India, it's a major factor in an agrarian crisis that has claimed over 300,000 farmers' lives since 1995 by suicide. The survivors, mostly widows, are both victims and witnesses to this ongoing disaster. This photography project, produced in collaboration with some such witnesses, puts faces to these grim statistics. It aims to indirectly contribute to a future where every vulnerable member of the farming community, regardless of country or geography, has the means and dignity to survive. In that sense, this project is driven by hope rather than despair.
